What’s it doing?

Tell me what it’s doing and I’ll tell you what it might be — before you pay anyone a dime.

If it won't start

Stale fuel and a gummed-up carburetor

Gas left sitting over the winter turns to varnish and plugs the tiny jets inside the carburetor. It is the single most common thing I see every spring, and most of the time I can clean it and have it running very quickly.

If it starts, then dies

Fuel starvation — a blocked jet or a plugged cap vent

Your machine fires on the fuel sitting in the carburetor bowl, then starves when nothing refills it. Sometimes it is a partially clogged jet, sometimes it is as simple as a fuel cap that cannot vent and is pulling a vacuum in the tank.

If it runs rough or surges

Dirty carburetor or a choked air filter

That hunting, surging sound is the engine swinging between too much air and not enough fuel. Usually a carburetor clean and a fresh filter settles it right down.

If it’s smoking

Oil where it should not be — or running too rich

White or blue smoke means oil is getting into the cylinder: overfilled crankcase, stored on its side, or worn rings. Black smoke is the opposite problem, too much fuel. The color tells me which way to look before I even take the cover off.

If it’s hard to pull

Hydro-locked, seized, or something jammed in the blade

If the rope barely moves, stop pulling — you can crack a recoil housing. Often, the problem is that oil has migrated into the cylinder, which is harmless and fixable. Occasionally it is more serious, and I would rather look at it than have you force it.

If it cuts uneven

Deck out of level, or a bent blade

Stepped or scalped stripes almost always trace back to deck level, tire pressure, or a blade that met something solid. I level decks on site with the machine on flat ground, the way it actually sits when it cuts.

Not on the list, or not sure? That’s fine — and I’ll figure it out.

About me

I’ve been fixing small engines for many years. No counter, no ticket number, no “we’ll call you in three weeks.” You deal with me directly, start to finish.

I’ll diagnose what’s wrong and give you an estimate for its repair. If it costs more than the machine is worth, I’ll say that too. Many jobs are finished the same visit.

It’s always hard to find the right person when you need to do something a bit new. No worries here. My mower has never run better. Jim did a great job. Good communication, timely, friendly, and the price was very reasonable. I’ll definitely call him again when needed.
